Since July Google have made changes to its Google Maps. It is now called Google Map Platform and they have reduced their 18 different APIs down to 3 – Maps, Routes, and Places. These particular updates don’t affect existing code. However, what does affect everyone is that they have now monetized their map service and it applies to all users of their service even if you just have one map on your contact page.

What does that mean to you? Well it means that in order to use Google Maps on your website you need an API and to get that you need to set up a billing account and enter credit card details. They have given everyone $200 per month for free so the majority of websites that have a single map for their business should not go beyond this and therefore no cost will incur.
